How to Dye Wigs With Colors

Synthetic wigs are affordable and come in a wide range of colors, but they suffer from being immune to traditional hair dyes. Because synthetic wigs are made from manufactured fibers, they do not react to dyes intended for human hair. While a wig made entirely of human hair can be dyed through the traditional dyeing process, synthetic wigs require special chemicals and a bit of forethought if you want to dramatically change them from their original color. You can make your own synthetic hair dye with simple craft supplies; the process is a bit more complicated than using a packaged hair dye.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a wig that is lighter than the final color you want. You cannot lighten the hair on a synthetic wig, so you have to start light and work your way to dark.

    • 2

Dump two cups of rubbing alcohol into an empty spray bottle.

    • 3

Add acrylic ink to the alcohol, mixing as you go. Stop adding ink when the liquid in the bottle reaches a rough approximation of the shade you want.

    • 4

Hang your wig in an outdoor location or a well-ventilated room. Acrylic ink will dye whatever surfaces it touches, so be aware of your surroundings.

    • 5

Spray the wig with your ink and alcohol mixture until you have evenly covered the entire wig. Leave it to dry for six to eight hours, and then rinse it thoroughly to remove excess dye. Check the final color to determine whether you need to do another coat.
