How to Calculate a Lead Screw Force

Calculating the forces of lead screws is an important part of assembly design. Knowing the force required to drive in a lead screw can help you determine the load needed to support columns and other tensile parts of your design, as well as what materials can and cannot be used. Determining the total lead screw force is done by adding the force caused by acceleration, force caused by external factors and force caused by friction all together.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the individual values of accelerative force, external force and friction-based force. Multiply the acceleration (in inches per second) over 12 by the weight of the lead screw divided by the force of gravity, or 32.174 feet per second.

    • 2

Swap out the acceleration value in the previous step for external force and friction force to respectively calculate all three values.

    • 3

Add all of the three values together to calculate the total lead screw force.
