Jet Ski Speedometer Troubleshooting

Speedometers may seems like the sole domain of road-going vehicles, but they can be equally valuable to jet-skis. They have safe speeds to observe too, and the purpose of a speedometer is just as important to these crafts. So if there is an issue with the unit, it needs to be fixed -- whether its loose cabling, a faulty speedometer unit or serious internal issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the engine is switched off and then use a small screwdriver to remove the screws which hold the speedometer to it's mounting. Note that different models may have different methods by which the speedometers are secured.

    • 2

Carefully pull the freed speedometer out from its mounting so you can examine it. Check the speedometer cable connection on the back of the gauge. It should not be damaged and should be securely fastened in place. Firmly plug the cable into the socket if it is loose.

    • 3

Replace the speedometer unit if the speedometer cable is attached but the reading is still faulty. Simply remove the cable from the back of the unit and plug it in to a new unit before securing it in place by re-attaching the mounting screws. Take the jet-ski for a ride and test the new speed readings.

Have the jet-ski serviced by a professional if you are still having problems; it could indicate a malfunctioning speedometer cable or something seriously wrong with the speed sensors.
