How to Troubleshoot Phase Converters

Phase converters can be priceless electronic units, either at home or in the workplace; they convert single-phase electrical power into multi-phase electrical power capabilities. But, this process, which can be invaluable for uses such as welding, food processing, grinders, sanders and mixers, can be quickly derailed by simple problems. Issues such as sticking switches, clogged ventilation and faulty electronics should be acknowledged and fixed.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that the ventilating slots are open and unobstructed. If the phase converter is struggling to run, then it could be due to this build up of dust and debris which can occur if the ventilating slots are not open.

    • 2

Use lubricating oil on the bearings around the phase converter controls. This will fix the issue of stiff or sticking controls which can make the machine more difficult than usual to control.

    • 3

Change where your phase converter is mounted to remove the threat of excess vibrations or noise. Improper mounting, such as bolting a motor generator to a floor, can cause vibration to the bearing. Move the unit, or install rubber isolation mounting feet.

    • 4

Check to see if you have any voltage surges before the installation of the phase converter. Or, if you have already had it fitted without checking this, then call an electrician if you are now suffering from tripped breakers and blown fuses. It could indicate an electrical fault afflicting your unit.
