How to Build Your Own Camper Ice Box

When purchasing a cooler or ice box for your camper is not an option, you can build always your own. You can do this by constructing a box and inserting foam insulation. The insulation inside the box will keep the contents cold. You can find the materials for this project at any home improvement store. To do this you need to obtain the proper measurements before starting construction.

  • Tape measure
  • Circular saw
  • Wood glue
  • Finish nails
  • Nail gun
  • Foam insulation
  • Construction adhesive

Instructions

    • 1

      Measure the dimensions of the area for the ice box in your camper with a tape measure. Make a note of the width, length and height. Subtract three-fourths of an inch from the height.

      Transfer the measurements for the width and height in Step 1 to a sheet of birch plywood. Subtract three-fourths of an inch from the width. Cut two pieces to this size using the circular saw.

      Transfer the length and height in Step 1 to a second sheet of birch plywood. Cut two pieces to this size.

      Measure and cut two pieces of birch plywood that is the width and length in Step 1. These will be used as the top and bottom of the ice box. Set one piece aside.

      Assemble the five pieces of birch plywood together in the shape of a box. Apply wood glue to the sides of each piece. Secure the pieces together with finish nails using the nail gun.

      Measure the inside dimensions of the completed wood box. Note the width, length and height. Subtract 1 inch from the height. Repeat steps 2 through 5 to cut six pieces of foam insulation.

      Apply the construction adhesive to the back of each piece of insulation. Place one of the large pieces at the bottom. Set the other pieces on the matching sides of the box. Press on the foam insulation so that it adheres to the wood.

      Cut 1 inch from the perimeter of the remaining piece of insulation. Apply construction adhesive to the back, then set it in the center of the remaining piece of birch plywood. Press on the foam insulation to adhere it to the wood.

      Set the top on the body of the ice box. Place the completed ice box inside the camper.
