How to Install a Three-Way PTO Valve

A PTO, or power take-off, is a hydraulic valve with one inlet pipe and three outlet pipes. By moving the valve control handle, hydraulic fluid from the inlet is routed to one of the three outlets. These valves are commonly used to control hydraulic cylinders on tractors and construction equipment. Replacing a PTO valve is not as simple as unscrewing the old pipe and screwing on the new pipe. You must complete a few more steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Box wrenches
  • New three-way PTO valve
  • Gaskets
  • O-rings

Instructions

    • 1

Check the hydraulic system and ensure it has been depressurized to prevent injury from high pressure fluid. Use caution because some mechanical devices move when depressurized if they are not in a stable position.

    • 2

Locate the PTO valve inlet section by looking at the PTO valve documentation. Connect this section of the valve to the pump outlet pipe, which supplies the valve with pressurized fluid.

    • 3

Locate the three hydraulic cylinder hoses that connect to the three three-way valve outlet pipes. Connect each hose one at a time to the PTO valve by screwing the hose into the threaded pipe section. Use the box wrench to tighten each section. Some valves require a gasket or O-ring to be placed into the valve socket before screwing in the hoses. Check the manufacturer's documentation to determine whether a gasket or O-ring is required.
