How to Keep Dust Out of My Lenses

The easiest way to maintain your lenses is to keep dust out of them in the first place. Cleaning lenses not only takes time, but increases the chances of scratching them. There are ways to care for your lenses to ensure they will almost never have to be cleaned.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a lens hood and lens caps as the first lines of defense against dust. Not only will they protect from dust, but they will keep lenses from getting bumped or broken. Consider keeping a UV filter on your lens. There are different qualities available to match your lens type and budget.

Invest in a padded camera bag. Not only will it protect your camera from dust, but it will also protect it from breakage. Vacuum it out frequently to keep it dust-free. Put on both lens caps and the body cap if you take off your lens to pack up your camera. Keep everything packed inside of your bag when not in use to keep dust off of all parts.

    • 3

Shield your camera from the wind by using your body, keeping the camera body tilted down, if you can̵7;t go in your car or indoors to change lenses. Change lenses as quickly as possible.

    • 4

Wipe dust or fingerprints from lenses with washable microfiber cloths. Remove any dirt before wiping by using a brush or blower. Wash your cloths regularly to keep them from grit that could scratch your lenses, or use a fresh cloth each time you wipe.
