How to Calculate Disc Tally Charts

Collecting data such as the number of CDs or DVDs in a collection can be done by creating a tally chart. You can use the chart to divide the collection into groups and categories. To do this, you will need to first organize your disk collection. Once the disks are organized to your satisfaction, you are ready to create a tally chart.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a rectangle-shaped box on a sheet of paper with the pencil. Enter three headings across the top of the box for each column -- ̶0;Decade,̶1; ̶0;Tally̶1; and ̶0;Total.̶1; This is your data table.

    • 2

Enter the decades that you have in your CD collection in the first column. Examples to use include the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s and 2000s. Separate each decade by drawing a line from one side of your data table to the other.

    • 3

Count the number of CDs you have for the 1970s. Draw a line in the ̶0;Tally̶1; column for each disk until you reach four. Draw a diagonal line through the four lines to indicate five. Tally all of the disks for the decade in increments of five. Repeat this step for the remaining decades.

    • 4

Count the number of tally marks for the 1970s that indicate ̶0;five.̶1; Count the remaining tally marks in the ̶0;Tally̶1; column. Add the numbers together and enter the amount in the ̶0;Total̶1; column. Repeat this step for the remaining decades in the ̶0;Tally̶1; column.
