How to Make an American Girl Home

American Girl dolls are 18 inches tall; therefore an American Girl home is going to be a large doll house. The doll house builder must consider the floor space that will be consumed by the doll house. The house can double as a storage unit for the dolls and their accessories inside a girl's room or installed in a play area. This plan keeps the front open to used as shelving, but the ends could be enclosed and doors attached.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the pieces. Back: 1/4-inch plywood by 36 inches by 63 inches. Floors: four pieces 3/4- inch plywood by 36 inches by 20 inches. Center dividers and supports: Three pieces 3/4- inch plywood by 20 inches by 20 inches. Roof support: one pieces 3/4-inch plywood 6 inches by 20 inches. Roof pieces: two 1/4-inch plywood by 20 inches by 20 inches. Four lathe cut posts--which can be purchased ready made from a lumber store--20 inches long.

    • 2

Measure 18 inches from the edge of the back on the 36-inch ends, and make a mark. Using the marks as a guide, draw a line from top to bottom down the length of the board.

    • 3

Draw center lines from back to front on all the floor pieces. Cut a 6-inch by 10-inch stairwell next to the center line in two of the floor pieces.

    • 4

Spread glue on a 36-inch edge of one of the solid floor pieces. Match it up with the 36-inch edge of the backing piece, and nail it together with finishing nails.

    • 5

Turn the house on its side. Fasten the support poles to the corners of the floor using wood screws inserted through the front corners of the floor into the poles.

    • 6

Center the first divider on the guide lines drawn earlier. Check the fit. Spread glue on the bottom and back edge of the divider, settle it in place on the guide lines and nail in place using finishing nails. Turn the house right side up.

    • 7

Center the next floor piece above it, making sure the stairwell is positioned toward the back of the house. Check for any needed adjustments. Spread glue on the top of the center divider. Nail the floor piece to the divider and to the back wall.

    • 8

Drill from the top of the floor corners into the posts, and fasten with wood screws that are threaded on both ends. Drill into the base of the next corner posts, and tighten them down onto the top of the posts.

    • 9

Add the second floor divider, using the same procedure as the first. Add the third floor, using the same procedure as was used for the second floor. Spread glue on the top of the third floor divider, place the attic floor on it, and fasten the corner posts down using regular wood screws. Glue the attic support in place.

    • 10

Nail the roof pieces to the center support and the edges of the roof.

    • 11

Decorate the house using the theme for your child's particular doll or your imagination. Add doll house shingles to the roof. Add Paint, wallpaper and other finishing touches to the interior. Paint fake windows on the back wall, and add fabric window curtains.
