How to Run the Same Size Thread in a Screw

Screws that are needed for a job or project may need to be a specific size. Finding the same size of thread for a screw is done by taking accurate measurements. The measurements for a screw that are needed to determine thread size are the major diameter and threads per inch. Once measurements for screw threads have been obtained you can then cross-reference using a screw thread chart.

Instructions

  1. Major Diamater

    • 1

Measure the major diameter of the screw by using a micrometer. Open the micrometer by turning the handle.

    • 2

Insert the screw into the micrometer. Tighten the micrometer to secure the screw.

    • 3

Set the dial on the micrometer for decimal inches or millimeters. Read the major diameter measurement of the screw.

    Threads Per Inch

    • 4

Place the thread gauge on a table or desk. If a thread gauge is not available you can use a ruler.

    • 5

Position the head of the screw at the end of the thread gauge or ruler.

    • 6

Count the number of threads that are on the square that span 1-inch on the thread gauge or ruler.
