How to Make a Titanium Mold

Titanium is a highly useful material. Originally admired for its power and durability in seawater, the element is now desired for its lightweight efficiency in manufacturing and its lustrous color. Molds used for titanium products must be carefully made with the proper materials, as the wrong materials could cause a dangerous chemical reaction with the titanium. Those with knowledge and experience in the areas of mold making and molten states can make molds for titanium objects.

Instructions

    • 1

Chose your wood, metal or plastic mold depending on what you want for the final product. Some molds may be in halves that will eventually be locked together, while others may just be single pieces.

    • 2

Mix the graphite powder, water, pitch syrup and starch to make a firm paste that can be spread on the wood, plastic or metal mold. The exact measurements of the mixture components will depend on how thick you want the graphite layer to be over the mold.

    • 3

Cover the mold with the graphite mixture, using the tamp to get it spread evenly. Let the graphite covered mold sit to dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 4

Bake the dried mold at a low temperature to prevent steam generation and cracking during firing. The exact baking time and temperature will depend on the thickness and shape of the mold.

    • 5

Fire the mold at more than 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Clean and assemble the mold and cut gates and risers into it.
