How to Install a Weed Whip Motor on a Bike

A weed whip is a yard implement used to trim weeds around trees, your sidewalk and external buildings. Weed whips use a gas or electric engine to turn a rotor on the end of the body that spins a cord or string to cut the weeds. Though you can power your bike with the engine from an old weed whip, you must use an engine powered by gas.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the set screw that secures the motor to the body of the weed whip trimmer. Remove the screw with a screwdriver, a separate the motor from the body. Disengage the controls from the body.

    • 2

Measure the diameter of the gear used to turn the axle on the bicycle. Attach a gear of the same size or diameter to the drive shaft of the motor. Place the bike chain over the gear to ensure that it fits.

    • 3

Position a metal bracket on the bike frame above the petals. Insert U-bolts over the bike frame and through the bracket. Secure the U-bolts to the bike frame by tightening a nut with a wrench.

    • 4

Place the weed whip motor on the metal bracket. Secure the motor to the metal bracket using the bolts. Tighten nuts onto the bolts with a wrench.

    • 5

Attach the controls to the bike's handlebars. Secure the wiring for the controls to the frame using zip ties.

    • 6

Start the weed whip engine to ensure the gear spins correctly and the motor does not vibrate excessively. Turn off the engine.

    • 7

Attach the chain to the gear on the motor and the gear on the bike. If the chain is too loose, you must remove a link or two.

    • 8

Start the engine, and use the throttle controls to increase the speed.
