How to Run Cost Comparisons Using Storage Heating Vs. Gas Central Heating

If your home is heated using natural gas or electricity, you can run a cost comparison to see the costs for each heating source. A baseboard heater is a type of storage heating. Electricity use is measured in kilowatt hours and natural gas usage is measured in therms. You can easily do a comparison by determining the cost for a unit of electricity and for a unit of the natural gas, depending on your source of heat.

  Determine the cost per therm of natural gas by referring to your gas bill. Divide the total amount on the bill by the amount of natural gas that was used for the month.

  Multiply the cost of gas per therm by 0.024. This will give you the equivalent price for a kilowatt hour of electricity.

  Write down the price for a kilowatt hour of electricity

  Determine the cost of the electricity per kilowatt hour by referring to your electric bill. Divide the total cost by the amount of electricity that was used for the month,

  Multiply the cost of electricity per kilowatt hour by 29.3. This gives you the equivalent price of a therm of natural gas.
