How to Build a Case to Protect Your Foam RC Plane

RC (radio-controlled) model planes made from foam are lightweight and not too brittle, so they won't be destroyed by minor taps and bangs. However, a violent collision can snap the wings and put the plane out of action. This is especially frustrating if your plane sustains its injury not from some acrobatic stunt gone wrong but by sliding off a shelf or being tripped over when left lying around. Protect against these eventualities with a hard, shock-resistant case.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Hard case from an electric drill or other tool
  • Pencil
  • Card stock

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, wingspan and height of your model plane. Find a hard tool box at least 2 inches wider in each dimension than the plane.

    • 2

Draw around the plane onto the card stock. Cut out the shape you draw. Cut two blocks of packaging foam that, one on top of the other, will exactly fit into the box.

    • 3

Use the card stock as a template to cut the plane's shape out of foam with the foam cutter. Slide the blocks into the tool box, one in the box bottom and the other in the lid.

    • 4

Place the plane into the shape cut from the foam. Close the lid and lock it shut with the catch.
