Things to Shoot at a Shooting Range

If it's your first time visiting a shooting range, you may be confused about what type of targets you'll be shooting. There are two types of ranges, outdoor and indoor, and each brings its own sort of targets. It's important to note, however, that age restrictions will vary state by state, so make sure to check with your shooting range beforehand.
  1. Stationary Targets

    • The stationary target is a flat target anywhere from 50 to 100 feet away from the shooter. This type of target may have a series of circles similar to a dart board on it, or the outline of a person. The stationary target is usually found at indoor ranges and is often used for military or police force practice.

    Metal Plates

    • Metal plates are a type of target that flip down when hit with a bullet. This type of target is typically found at an indoor shooting range and several of the plates will be lined up in front of the shooter, who takes the targets down one by one. This offers a smaller target than the stationary target.

    Clay Pigeons

    • Clay pigeons are small, clay disks that are shot into the air with a sling or air gun and then shot down by the individual doing the practice shooting. This type of shooting is typically done outdoors with a shotgun. Hunters of different types of birds usually participate in this type of shooting for hunting practice, or for a substitute to hunting birds.

    Animal Plates

    • Animal plates are similar to metal plates, but are shaped like the outline of various animals. This type of shooting practice is typically used for the hunter and usually found at an outdoor shooting range. Some animal plates fall down when hit by a bullet, simulating the hunting experience.
