How to Value a Willits Canoe

The Willits brothers made about 25 canoes a year by hand from 1914 until the mid-1960s. Their canoes were unusual because they did not use horizontal supports in their boats, but rather a double frame of vertical cedar boards separated by a layer of waterproof fabric. This double-layer lining made the boats sturdy and long-lasting, and it is possible to find a Willits boat today that is in water-ready condition. The value of the boats depends on the condition of the boat and how many original pieces exist. A like-new Willits canoe will cost between $7,000 and $10,000, as of 2011.

Instructions

Inspect the frame for damage or problems. Look for space between the joints, any missing pieces and any areas where the frame looks like it was patched or damaged. Inspect the boat for signs of rot or weak joints. The worse the condition of the frame, the lower the price. A Willits canoe that is not seaworthy will have a value under $2,000 as of 2011. Refurbished frames will lower the price to the $4,000 range, according to the McFarland Lake Canoe Company.

Inspect the boat for the presence of additions. Any additions to the original boat will lower the value. This includes patching, changes in the original stain color, replacement boards or any modifications to the boat, such as changing the original seats or oars. These additions detract from the original value of the boat by several thousand dollars. If the boat is refurbished, but in good condition, the value typically hovers around the $4,000 range according to the McFarland Lake Canoe Company.

Look at the overall appearance of the boat. A sleek, polished boat will raise the value. Scuffs, chips, scratches and dirt will reduce the value. Determine if the original stain color has been changed -- the presence of the original stain and varnish will raise the value considerably. If you are unsure whether the finish is original, take the boat to a qualified appraiser who can identify the age of the finish.

Check for any original boating accessories. Original oars, sails, steering poles, bilge keels, rugs and canoe covers will increase the value of the boat by several hundred or thousand dollars, depending on how many of the original parts are present. The absence of these parts may lower the value of the boat.
