Place a 2-by-4 board on the edge of your workbench so that 12 inches extend off the side. Secure the 2-by-4 board to your bench by using a clamp.
Position the edge of the knife blade along the edge of the 2-by-4. Secure the knife blade to the 2-by-4 with a clamp.
Set the protractor on top of the knife blade and position the coarse metal file at 30 degrees. Begin to file on the edge of the knife blade. Continue this step to complete 85 percent of the work to put the bevel on the knife blade.
Switch to a medium metal file to smooth out the beveled edge of the knife blade. Continue to file until all of the coarse filling marks are removed from the knife blade.
Switch to the fine metal blade to finish the bevel on the knife blade. The fine metal file will remove any of the imperfections that are left from the filing process.
