How to Clean the Brushes on a Miller Welder

Miller began producing welders in 1929, and is still one of the most popular brands in the industry. The company's gasoline engine welders are known for being both affordable and handy for farm and ranch needs as well as hobby projects. Dirty brushes or slip rings on the welders can cause a miss before the engine goes into high idle, or can create a bad arc or no arc at all. The brushes should not be cleaned with any type of cleanser, but can be blown with compressed air to remove any debris or dirt.

  Ensure that the generator is powered off and cool. Remove the cover on the side of the welder that houses the generator. This typically requires removing several small screws with a screwdriver.

  Locate the brushes. They ride on what is known as a the commutator plates, which are on the rotor.

  Blow the area clear of debris with compressed air.

  Check for signs of wear on the brushes or the slip rings. Worn brushes should be replaced, and damaged slip rings should be repaired or resurfaced. Miller Customer Service can help you locate a local dealer for service.

  Replace the cover on the side of the welder, and secure by tightening the screws that you previously removed.
