How to Build a Water Drill Pipe

A water drill pipe is a pipe used to drill holes in soil with water pressure. If a garden hose is connected to the right size pipe, a jet of water will shoot out of the pipe when the water is turned on. If that jet is pointed down into the ground, the pipe can be pushed down into the ground. The jet of water pushes the soil out of the way to allow the pipe to move freely down into the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • 8-foot copper pipe 3/4-inch or 1/2-inch depending on the size hole needed
  • 1 garden hose
  • 3/4-inch hose clamp
  • Screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Sealant

Instructions

    • 1

Take the outlet end of the garden hose and cut off the metal threaded outlet. Slide the outlet end of the garden hose over one end of the copper pipe.

    • 2

Continue sliding the hose over the pipe for about 6 inches to 12 inches. Slide two hose clamps over the pipe and clamp the garden hose to the pipe.

    • 3

Use the screwdriver to tighten the hose clamps. Hook up the water hose to a spigot and test the water drill. As the drill is drilling, check the hose clamps to make sure they are not leaking. If they leak, try tightening them more. If they will not stop leaking, sealant will have to be placed between the pipe and the garden hose.
