How to Convert a Meat Band Saw for Woodworking

When a band saw has been used to cut meat, it can later be used to cut other materials such as metals or even wood. Converting a band saw that has been used for meat is as simple as changing the blade and cleaning it out; once you have removed the blade, you can quickly install a new blade that is capable of cutting wood. The speed can often be adjusted and may be set slower or faster depending on the type of wood you need to cut.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws holding the band saw blade cover to access the blade to replace the meat-cutting blade with the woodcutting type. Although band saw blades are similar, the teeth pattern is different depending on the material intended to be cut. Unscrew the screws all the way; pull the cover off or open it like a door, as it may be hinged, depending on the model.

    • 2

Loosen the tension of the moving gear for removal of the blade. Turn the handle counterclockwise to raise the bottom gear upwards so that you can remove the blade easily. Turn the handle until it stops and you have enough room to remove the blade without cutting yourself or having to use too much force. If you slip, you could cut yourself, so make sure that the meat-cutting blade is nice and loose before trying.

    • 3

Put your work gloves on and carefully remove the blade by pulling it towards you. These blades are large and floppy, so be careful to hold both ends and move slowly. Discard the blade safely, or use the plastic guard from the woodcutting blade to cover the teeth of the meat-cutting blade.

    • 4

Clean the inside of the saw area, as there will be an accumulation of meat and grease from the sawing process. Every time you change the band saw blade, you should clean the inside of the blade area to prevent debris from building and causing extra tension on the blade.

    • 5

Place the woodcutting blade on the gears with the teeth facing inwards. Wrap it around each gear and through the guide where the wood is placed for cutting. Start turning the tension handle while holding the blade; continue to turn the handle until the blade is tight. Push the back of the blade up against the back of each gear so that the blade is not touching the inside of the saw body, as any such rubbing will damage the teeth.

    • 6

Turn the blade on and watch it move to make sure that it is not rubbing anywhere on the saw. It may kick when it starts, but it should push itself on track if it is not already there. Replace the cover and tighten its screws.
