Instructions for Batten Pockets With Elastic

A batten rod or stick is a flat piece of plastic, metal or wood that helps stabilize a sail. These stabilizing sticks help control the sail and prevent it from flapping in the wind. Most sails use long horizontal pockets to support the sticks inside the sail. One problem that can occur with battens is that the stick can slip, causing the sail to move unpredictably. The best way to combat this problem is to use batten end caps that will secure the batten sticks in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the batten end cap along the edge of the batten pocket where the batten slides into the pocket. Align the back end of the end cap along the edge of the sail, just over the seam line that wraps around the outside edges of the sail. Determine if you want to use a batten end cap on both sides of the sail, or just one side.

    • 2

Mark the placement of the screw holes and notched edge with a pencil.

    • 3

Punch holes through the sail along the pencil marks with a hole punch and hammer.

    • 4

Align the two sides of the end cap on either side of the sail. Slide the screws inside the holes and screw the screws in place with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Repeat the above steps for all the other batten pockets on the sail, both on the luff and leech sides.

    • 6

Slide the batten inside the pocket. Fit the ends of each batten rod inside the end cap pockets. Tighten the screws to stabilize the battens and prevent them from slipping inside the elastic pocket.
