How to Build a Rappelling Tower

Scale walls like a solider, with your very own rappelling tower. Lumber, tools and basic construction knowledge are all you need. The tower wall can be built by attaching wood planks to two poles that are driven into the ground. A structure for a stand at the top can be attached to the wall. A structure for a pulley and rope must be added to make the wall scalable. A rappelling tower is useful for military training, and can be helpful in gaining upper body strength, agility, and overall balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig two holes with post hole diggers. Make them deep enough to hold large posts or telephone poles. Slide the posts of poles into the holes. Have at least four to five strong individuals to help you, as telephone poles or posts of this size are extremely heavy. Get a bag of cement and mix with water. Use a cement mixer or a shovel to do this. Pour the mixed cement into the hole and let it dry.

    • 2

Attach planks horizontally across the two posts with nails. Start at the bottom and run the planks all the way up. Use a ladder to reach the highest parts of the wall.

    • 3

Dig two more holes behind the wall with the post hole diggers. Place two more posts in these. Fill the holes with cement and let dry. Use the ladder to reach the top and nail boards from the back posts to the posts holding the wall planks. Attach another board between the two back posts to connect them. Nail more planks on top of the connector boards to create a deck from which to rappell off. A ladder can be built by nailing two more boards up the side of the structure and adding planks.

Build a structure for a rope and pulley. Erect a railing out of more boards on the top of the deck. Make the railing high enough that the pulley can be attached above the rappeller. Nail a board in the center of the railing structure and attach the pulley to it with nails. Run the rope through it. Rappellers can now grab both ends of the rope, and gradually loosen the slack to slide down the wall.
