Cart Types

There are a variety of vehicles that fall under the designation of a cart. From golf carts to horse carts, many wheeled vehicles can be considered a cart. Carts can be used for recreation or transportation. They can also be used to haul things to make your life easier.
  1. Golf Carts

    • The term "golf cart" can be used to describe a handheld pull cart that a golfer drags behind them, but is more commonly used to describe a motorized vehicle a golfer drives. Golf carts are not limited to the course, however. The first electric golf cart had only three wheels and was introduced in 1951 by Marketeer. In the 1970s and ̵7;80s, golf carts became gas-powered, four-wheel vehicles ̵2; what we commonly think of as a golf cart now.

    Shopping Carts

    • The original shopping cart was developed in the late 1930s by Sylvan Goldman. His design, patented in the 1940s, was inspired by a folding chair. The original shopping cart held two wire shopping baskets, one underneath the other. A later form of the shopping cart included a power-lift switch that would raise the metal basket to the height of the counter for easier check out. The modern single-basket shopping cart we see most commonly today was later introduced. The child seat addition to the shopping cart was introduced in 1954.

    Horse Carts

    • In the days before cars, horse carts were used to transport goods, people and other supplies. Since horses can walk greater distances faster than people, it made sense to attach a cart to them. These carts tended to be simple, wooden boxes that were then attached around the horse̵7;s neck. While horse carts are not used with the frequency with which they used to be, you will still see them used by the Amish, who don't drive, or as in a horse-drawn carriage in cities as a tourist attraction.

    Go Karts

    • Go-karts are recreation vehicles used for racing. The original invention of the go-kart is commonly credited to Art Ingels in the late 1950s. Original go-karts ran on modified chain saw motors. Today, they can be more sophisticated. Modern go-karts can run on two stroke motors, a more powerful motor, or four stroke motors, which are more commonly used in recreational go-kart racing and are not dissimilar to a lawnmower motor.
