How to Make a Rubber Bearing Pad

Rubber bearing pads are typically made from room temperature vulcanization (RTV) rubber or other types of silicone. These give it a medium hardness with a high level of flexibility and do not allow the pads to shift or slide. Rubber bearing pads are often used as vibration-damping mounts and linings in steel and concrete construction. They are also used as door seals, gasketing seals and rub strips. RTV and other types of silicone are readily available at most hobby and art supply stores, as well as in some home improvement warehouse stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size of your pad. If the pad size is generic, find a cardbox box of the appropriate size. If there is a specific size for the pad, nail four pieces of lumber cut to length together and affix them to a plywood bottom to form a box.

    • 2

Mix RTV rubber or silicone in a large mixing container. RTV comes in a two-part mix with a catalyst and the rubber. They are generally mixed in a one-to-one ratio, but check the directions on your packaging to be sure.

    • 3

Stir well with a stir stick. Pour the rubber into the mold until the mold is filled to the desired thickness.

    • 4

Allow to cure for four to six hours. Tear away the cardboard or use a hammer to remove the nails and dismantle the box.
