Types of Sanding Pads
There are two basic types of abrasives (sandpaper or cloth discs that fit on the tool's sanding pads): hook and loop (also called Velcro), and self-adhesive. Some adhesive papers are used with spray adhesive. Many dual-action air sanders use self-adhesive sandpaper, but later models use hook and loop. Some online order companies offer sand pad holders for changing discs. For example, a hook-and-loop holder might be purchased for use with an original self-adhesive sander. Sanders with a dust-free option use vacuum hoses to remove dust. Holes in sandpaper for dust-free sanders must correspond to the same number of holes in the tool's vacuum sand pad.
Types of Grit
Sandpapers for dual action, air hand sanders require different grit for different jobs. Ceramic grit sandpaper may be purchased for polishing steel, and silicon grit might be chosen for glass or fiberglass (boats, cars body work). Wood sanding typically requires an aluminum oxide grit. Marble polishing on the other hand, might require a diamond grit, using a wet sandpaper disk. Dry grit numbers might range from 40 to 600 (course to smooth), and are numbered according to the number of grains per inch of sandpaper.
Availability of Kobalt Sanders
Lowes Home Improvement stores are introducing a range of Kobalt tools. However, the Kobalt hand sander 290315 has not been sold in stores since January 2011. Still, this model can be found online on Overstock, eBay and similar sites. Lowes currently carries other model Kobalt hand sanders. These and other Kobalt products are being sold exclusively through Lowes Home Improvement Stores.
Locating Pads and Abrasives
Lowes plans to stock Kobalt accessories for these tools, and any brand of 6-inch sandpaper discs should be interchangeable with Kobalt sanders. Meanwhile, countless online sandpaper product manufacturers offer a large variety of sander pads in a range of diameters, shank sizes, number of turns or grooves on the shank. Thus, a holder item might read: 6-inch x 5/8 ̵1; 11 (diameter x size of shank ̵1; number of turns or grooves on shank). Sandpapers of every size, shape and grit can also be ordered online.
