How to Calculate Lineation From a Rake

The term ̶0;rake̶1; in geology is an angle measurement that is used with a strike line and the dip of a plane to provide the orientation of any linear features. This is typically done when you need to find the orientation of a geologic structure that is on a plane when using a map. To do this you need to find the area that you want to examine and then cross-reference on a map.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sheet of tracing paper on a map of an area. Draw a strike line running between two points using a pencil and a ruler.

    • 2

Determine where the linear feature is located below the strike line. Mark the strike line to indicate a dip in the plane. This is the steepest angle on a plane.

    • 3

Position the protractor on the map along the strike line. Find the angle on the protractor that is between the strike line and the linear feature. The angle on the protractor is the measurement for the rake.

    • 4

Repeat this process to find the rake of another linear feature that is on a plane.
