Instructions
Measure, mark and cut your cardboard pieces. For the base, measure a length of cardboard 5-inches high by 26-inches long. Measure 26 inches and mark. Then use the ruler to mark a 5-inch height every few inches along the length of cardboard. Draw a line connecting the marks, and cut along this line. Then measure from the end 5 inches; 7 1/2 inches; 5 inches and 7 1/2 inches and mark the top and bottom of the cardboard at each of these points. Draw a line to connect the top and bottom marks you made. These are the corners of your base. Score the lines with the box cutter, but do not cut all the way through the cardboard. This will make your bends crisp when you form the base.
Form the length of cardboard into a rectangle. Fold the 1-inch overhang to the inside of the rectangle and tape the overhang to the inside of the next cardboard wall to close your base. Cut another piece of cardboard 11 inches long and 5 inches high to form the light tower. Use the method from step one, making your marks every 2 1/2 inches along the length of cardboard. Cut a 2 3/4-inch square for the roof of the light tower. When you finish the gable pieces in step 3, trace the triangle shape onto two alternate sides of the tower and cut them out. You will be setting the tower on top of a gable.
Cut two rectangular cardboard pieces, each 4 1/2 inches wide and 5 1/4 inches long. These will be bent in half and form the two gable roofs. For the gables, cut a piece of cardboard 12 inches long. Make a mark 1-inch and 3 1/2 inches from each end. The whole length of the gable will be 2 inches high, but the 2 1/2 inch-end pieces will each be topped with a triangle 1 1/2 inches high, and there will be 1 inch on each end, which will be folded in next to the middle roof section. Measure 2 1/4 inches from each end. Make a mark 3 1/2 inches from the bottom of the piece. Then draw a line 2 inches from the bottom of the cardboard, along the length of the piece. Draw your triangles from the 3 1/2-inch point you made to the 2-inch line. One side will be 1-inch from the end of the piece, and the other side will be 3 1/2 inches in. You will need two of these gable pieces.
Cut a roof piece 2 1/2-inches wide and 6 inches long. This will be bent in the center to make the center roof between the gables. The last piece is the light. Cut a piece of cardboard 1 3/4 inches tall and 6 inches long. Form the piece into a circle and tape the ends inside the circle. Set the circle on the cardboard and draw around the outside to make the roof of the light.
Assemble your lighthouse. Start with your base. Place each gable piece along each end of the base. One inch of the two inches will be showing above the base wall, use the other inch to tape the gables in place on the inside of the base. Place the two roof pieces on the gables. Tape them down on the underside of the roof inside the gable. Place the center roof piece. Dab some glue on the top edge of your tower and affix your tower roof. Do the same for the roof on your light. Dab glue along the bottom of the light and set it on the center of the tower roof. Dab glue along the triangular bottom of the tower piece and set your tower in the center of one of the gables. Allow the glue to dry.
Paint your lighthouse. Mix a little white and black to paint the roof pieces. Paint the rest of the cardboard red. Let the paint dry. When the first paint has dried paint in the windows. Use yellow for the windows to give the illusion of lights. There are windows around the top half of the light. Each triangle gable has an arched center window with two smaller rectangular windows on either side. The tower has a small square window at the top of each side. There are two small circular porthole windows on the bottom of each side of the base. The front of the building (with the tower on the left) has four small square windows across the top of the base. The back has two of the windows on the tower side of the base. The side of the building opposite the tower has a double door on the left. The doors are also red, and have windows on the top half.
