How to Test an ATV's Rectifier

The rectifier in an ATV takes alternating current (AC) from the alternator and changes it to direct current (DC) to keep the battery charged. If you have trouble keeping your battery charged, your alternator might be in good working condition, but the rectifier may need to be checked and possibly replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Ohmmeter (multimeter)

Instructions

    • 1

Set your ohmmeter to the ohms setting so that your readings will be accurate.

    • 2

Hook up your ohmmeter to one of the wires leading to one of the rectifier's diodes and to the ground/mounting stud.

    • 3

Record the reading from your ohmmeter.

    • 4

Reverse the ohmmeter's leads and take another reading. If the diode is operating correctly, there should be a wide difference between the two readings. If the readings are very close, the diode is leaking and no good. If there is a reading of 0.0, the diode is not operating.
