How to Make a Woven Woggle Printable Worksheet

A woggle is a ring which keeps the scout neckerchief from falling off. The woggle can be woven from leather, made from rope or simply cut from a length of pipe. You can use the opportunity of making a woggle to teach your scouts about knots. Knot-tying is an integral part of being a scout as the boys fashion rafts and shelters or tie off boats. Familiarize your scouts with knots while also making a handy craft they can wear. Set out the steps for making the woggle in a worksheet so that your scouts can follow along by themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Type lines at the top of each worksheet where the scout can leave his name, troupe and the date. Type a heading for your worksheet below the lines.

    • 2

Search the scout base site for information on the history of the woggle. Woggles originated when an 18-year-old Bill Shankley sought a way to secure scarves without creasing them. Relate the story of the woggle in an introductory paragraph as well as the history of the art of decorative knot-tying developed by sailors. Type up the brief history of the woggle in an introductory paragraph.

    • 3

Settle on a design which utilizes knots that the scouts have used. Insert pictures of the knots the scouts will use to make the woggles under the introductory paragraph. Next to each picture, place a box where the scouts can draw a picture of the knot and a couple of lines where they can write a description of how each knot is tied. This will help them to remember how to tie essential knots.

    • 4

Under the pictures of the knots, insert a step-by-step pictorial description of how to tie a woggle. Next to each picture, write a brief description of the step so that the scouts have both a visual and descriptive explanation of every step.

    • 5

Create lines at the end of the worksheet where scouts can write their own ideas on how to decorate the woggle described in the worksheet. Each scout must, upon receipt of the worksheet, write their name and other information on the worksheet. They must follow the instructions to create the woggle and decorate it as they wish. They should hand in the woggle with the worksheet.
