How to Build a Mash Tun With a Heating Element

Brewing your own alcohol can be rewarding, fun and economical. It is a popular hobby with enthusiasts around the world brewing beer, wines and spirits. Mashing is the process whereby grains are mixed with water and heated to break down the starch in the grains to produce sugars. This part of the brewing process is done in a mash tun. The novice home brewer can make a simple starter mash tun by using an insulated cooler and a water heater for the heating element. The supplies you need are readily available at home improvement stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Large insulated cooler
  • Water heater element
  • Waterproof tape
  • Waterproof sealant

Instructions

      Remover the drain from the cooler and take the rubber washer off of it.

      Replace the rubber washer in the drain hole and feed the heating element through it. Use waterproof tape to seal any gaps between the washer and element.

      Apply a liberal amount of waterproof sealant around the drain hole and rubber washer to ensure that it is watertight and will not leak.
