How to Build a Salting Table for Hides

A salting table for hides is a wooden table where you salt a hide to prepare it for tanning. You spread out a piece of raw hide on the table and then sprinkle an even layer of salt over the leather. Then you flip the leather over to salt the other side after the first side has dried. Build a quick and simplified salting table for hides using pine lumber. You can build this straightforward design in your wood-shop in less than an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 4 pine boards, 1-by-4-by-44 inches
  • 11 pine boards, 1-by-4-by-46 inches
  • 4 pine boards, 3-by-3-by-33 inches
  • Screw gun
  • 68 wood screws, 2 ¾-inch

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 44-inch boards on edge, parallel and spaced 44 inches apart. Set the other two 44-inch boards between them at right angles and spaced so they're flush with the ends of the first pair of 44-inch boards. Screw through the first pair and into the ends of the second pair. Use eight screws for this task. This is the frame to your hide salting table top.

    • 2

Lay eleven 46-inch boards on top of the frame so they are at a right angle to the first boards that were set in the previous step. Space the boards ½ inch apart and position them so their ends are 1/4-inch away from the 44-inch boards that they are perpendicular to. Screw the boards to the frame using four screws for each board.

    • 3

Turn the frame over and position a 33-inch board inside each corner of the frame. Screw four screws through each corner into the 33-inch boards. These are the legs to your salting table. Turn the table upright so it stands on all of its legs.
