Wood Plaques
Wood plaques are often the most popular plaques used in mounting techniques. For the most part, designers use simple woods to create the plaque. Pine and oak woods are commonly used and are stained prior to mounting the antlers. The stain makes the wood shine and stand out and adds a rustic element to the piece. Other woods that can be used to make plaques include walnut, cherry and willow.
Painted Plaques
Another idea for designing an antler mounting plaque is to paint the base of the plaque. This is an especially useful design technique when the plaque will become a piece of artwork or a focal point in a room. Consider painting the base a bright white to help it stand out on a wall, or it could be painted an accent color to coordinate with paint on the wall. Be sure that the wood is sanded down properly before painting it. A varnish finish may help preserve the piece after the paint has been applied.
Felt Mounts
Another way to help the design of the plaque is to include a felt mount between the two antlers. This is an inexpensive way to dress up the entire plaque, and it can add an element of prestige to the overall look. The mount goes in between the two antlers and holds the antlers in place. Considering choosing felt that coordinates not just with the wall the plaque will hang on, but also the wood the plaque is made of. Color suggestions include red, green and navy blue.
Leather Mounts
For a truly regal look, consider adding a leather mount to your plaque. While it is a bit more expensive, it does capture a certain outdoors, rustic feel. Leather mounts can be done in a variety of different colors, including a buttercup yellow, black, chocolate brown or red. A leather mount would work well in a rustic home as well as a home with a modern theme. This is a versatile way to dress up an antler mounting plaque.
