MIG Ideas

Developed in the 1940s, MIG, short for metal inert gas, is a popular, arguably the most common, type of welding. MIG welding guns work when a copper-coated wire and an inert shielding gas, such as argon or helium, are fed through the gun. Because of its speed and because it can be used by robots, this welding style is often used in high-production fabrication shops. Nonetheless, welders can undertake more personal MIG projects as a hobby or to build a business.
  1. Shop

    • For those who often work in a shop or garage, having everything organized helps in completing projects smoothly and in a timely manner. Use your MIG welder to create shop storage and work areas. Make a sturdy stool for times when you need to sit, and create a workbench to hold projects. Weld the legs together and attach a piece of plywood or large sheet of metal for the seat or tabletop. A tool storage shelf is another appropriate MIG project, because it can be customized to fit your tools.

    Auto

    • Experienced mechanics can try building a motorcycle. Use a MIG welder to create a custom jig and frame, and build from there. Non-mechanics might adapt an existing vehicle instead. Make a truck bed gate that can be adjusted to different positions up and down the bed. Use the gate flush against boxes or other loaded materials to keep them from sliding around in the bed and possibly bouncing out.

    Home

    • Create a rustic lodge atmosphere by welding furniture in a combination of metal and wood. Weld a bed frame with metal posts, the top two posts taller than the bottom two. Attach wooden boards between the posts to serve as a headboard and footboard. In the same way, nightstands, end tables and coffee tables can be built. Carry the rustic feel into the kitchen as well with a metal wine rack.

    Art

    • MIG welding can often seem industrial, with the constant need to follow rules and step-by-step plans. Ignore the rules sometimes and challenge your creativity by making original art pieces. Try welding a metal tree or sunflower for the garden, making an eagle to perch regally atop a flagpole, creating a decorative wall clock or designing an abstract sculpture.
