How to Make Action Figure Molds

Action figures are a classic pastime for children of many generations. Many action figures represent iconic superheros, such as G.I. Joe, Superman and Batman. Action figures, especially the collectible ones, can be expensive. If you have authentic action figures that you want to keep in good condition, make reproductions of the figures to use for play. To reproduce action figures, begin by making an action figure mold.

Instructions

    • 1

Mold a chunk of clay into two blocks of relatively equal size. The size of the blocks will depend on the size of the action figures used. Create blocks that are slightly larger than the dimensions -- length, width and depth -- of the action figure so that you can fully compress the figure into each block.

    • 2

Brush a coat of petroleum jelly onto the action figure with your fingertips. Fully coat the figure, taking care to cover crevices and cracks, to prevent the figure from sticking to the mold or losing its paint.

    • 3

Smooth out the bumps of the clay blocks. Hold one block in one hand and the action figure in the other and press the two together. Avoid simply pushing the figure into the clay. Instead, smooth the clay around the figure for a sealed fit. Place the second block on the other side of the action figure and, likewise, smooth this clay around the figure, leaving no spaces or crevices between the clay and the action figure.

    • 4

Allow the clay to sit for five minutes to begin to harden around the mold. Then, before the clay becomes too solid, begin to cut the block in half with a knife and wiggle the clay blocks apart from each other. Remove the action figure with one finger, taking care not to disturb the clay and interfere with the mold. Let the clay harden overnight for a two-sided mold.
