How to Make a Floral Boutonniere

A boutonniere adds a beautiful touch to man's suit or tuxedo, whether it is worn to a prom or a wedding. If you are on a budget, your best option is to make your own beautiful floral boutonniere at home. All it takes is a single flower of your choice and some florist tape and wire. Add a touch of class to your dress attire with a single rose bud, carnation or mini calla lily.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 small flower
  • Scissors
  • Florist tape (green)
  • Small gauge florist wire (1 piece, 9 inches)
  • Baby's breath or leaves
  • Pen or pencil
  • Boutonniere pin

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a flower that will be in the bride's bouquet and check it for freshness. If you are using a rose, squeeze the base to see if it is firm. If it is not, choose another one.

    • 2

Cut the stem off your flower about 1 inch below the base of the bloom.

    • 3

Insert one piece of floral wire through the stem horizontally just below the head of the flower.

    • 4

Bend the ends of the wire down.

    • 5

Wrap the wire in floral tape at a slight diagonal, starting at the base of the flower and moving toward the end. Stretch the tape as you go so it sticks. Continue to wind the tape around the wires until they are hidden and tear or cut the tape at the end.

    • 6

Arrange baby's breath or a strand of leaves around your bloom. Try different things until you find a position you like.

    • 7

Tape the baby's breath or leaves to the stem by wrapping it in floral tape. Again, pull tight and wind at an angle. Do not wrap all the way down or this will add bulkiness. Wrap just enough to cover the stems.

    • 8

Twist the stem around a pen or pencil to create a nice curl.

    • 9

Insert a pin into the stem of the flower, underneath the base of the head.

    • 10

Spritz your boutonniere with water and store it in a zip-close bag in the refrigerator until you are ready to wear it.
