DIY Steel Fabrication

If you need a steel part that is an odd size and you can't find it anywhere else, you may be able to fabricate it yourself at home. The process involves cutting, bending and forming it into the shape you need for the specific project. To do this you will need to make use of tools in your garage or workshop.

Things You'll Need

Felt-tip marker
Tin snips
Propane torch
Pliers
Round form
Hammer

Instructions

  Draw a line on the piece of sheet metal using a straight edge and the felt-tip marker. Cut the sheet metal along the mark with the tin snips.

  Place the cut piece of metal into the jaws of a bench vise. Begin heating the sheet metal with a propane torch until it has a red hue. Grasp the metal with the pliers and pull to make a bend.

  Remove the metal from the vise and place it on a hard round form. Strike the metal using the hammer to mold it into the shape of the form.

  Repeat this process to fabricate other shapes from sheet metal.
