How to Make a Real Base With Sticks

A stick base has a variety of uses. During playtime, a stick base can act as a playhouse or fort. During a camping trip, a stick base can act as a temporary shelter from the sun or rain. At all times, making a real stick base is a project that children and adults will enjoy making alone or together. If tools are involved, the project should have adult supervision.

Things You'll Need

  • Sticks of various sizes

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location for the base. The best location is often an area close to other trees and brush that creates a natural space. If you try to build a base out in the open, it will take much longer. Find an area between 8- and 12-feet square with at least one existing wall.

    • 2

Jam larger sticks into the ground to form the walls. Leave a 2 foot gap in one area for a doorway. Place the other sticks about 6 inches apart. Use a post digger or shovel to make the holes in hard dirt.

    • 3

Clear the inside of the base of all sticks, brush, rocks and leaves. If the floor is dirt, you may want to layer leaves or vines on the ground to prevent the interior from getting muddy.

    • 4

Weave smaller sticks horizontally between the upright sticks to form the walls of the base. You can use flexible sticks or vines for this task.

    • 5

Lay some sticks on top of the base for a roof. Tie the sticks to the walls with flexible vines. Lay the sticks across the top vertically. Place a second horizontal layer over the top of the first roof layer. Place leaves and other brush on top of the roof for additional protection from the sun and rain.
