How to Wire Multi-Function Lights

Multi-function lights are great lights to use at parties, outside on your patio area or during the Christmas holiday season. Multi-function lights enable you to change the lighting sequence to one you prefer for a specific occasion. For example, you can make then flash at different speeds, or make them appear to chase. You can also get them to slowly dim and then brighten again. If you have a set of lights that remain permanently on, wire in a multi-function unit and you can adjust the lights to the setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure your light set is not plugged into the electricity supply before wiring the multi-function unit. Cut the wire on your light set about halfway between the transformer and the first light in the light set using a knife.

    • 2

Using wire strippers, remove 1/2 inch of the protective outer coating of the ends of the two halves of the wire cut, then remove ¼ inch of the plastic off the ends of the two internal wires extending from both halves.

    • 3

Remove the cover from the multi-function light unit. Undo the screws holding the cover in place using a screwdriver then lift off the cover. Inside the unit you will see two terminals at each end.

    • 4

Loosen the terminal screws using a screwdriver, but don't remove them. Look at the terminal labels. One set indicates "In" and the other "Out," or similar. Each terminal also has a "+" and a "-" marked on or near the screw.

    • 5

Slide the red wire on the end of the wire from the transformer under the "+" terminal screw on the "In" side and then tighten the screw. Slide the black wire from the transformer under the "-" terminal screw on the "In" side and tighten the screw.

    • 6

Repeat the process for the wires from the light set. Connect the red wire from the light set to the "+" terminal on the "Out" side and the black wire from the light set onto the "-" terminal on the same side. Tighten the screws.

    • 7

Replace the cover on the multi-function light unit. Replace the screws and tighten them. Insert the plug from the transformer into the wall socket and turn it on. Adjust the settings on the multi-function light unit to one that suits you.
