How to Make an Origami Black Belt in Karate

Wearing a black belt signifies that you have mastered aspects of the martial arts. You can make your own "black belt" and pretend to be a karate martial arts expert by using paper folding techniques (referencing the Japanese art of origami). You will need supplies from a crafts store and tools from around the house. Adult supervision is not needed if you are underage, since no cutting edge is used.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 sheets black construction paper, 8-by-10 inches
  • Cellophane tape
  • Lead pencil
  • Straightedge

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sheet of construction paper on a table horizontally. Place a second piece of construction paper horizontally on the table so that the left side touches the first paper's right side. Tape the sides together with strips of cellophane tape. Repeat this procedure with a third sheet of construction paper.

    • 2

Fold the top edges of the three sheets over to the bottom edges. Smooth the creases down with your finger. Repeat this procedure an additional time.

    • 3

Measure 2 inches in from the left end of the first sheet of construction paper and from the right end of the third sheet. Make a dot at the 2-inch mark with a lead pencil.

    • 4

Draw a vertical line down the length of the sheets with a straightedge and the pencil. Color in the space from each end to the vertical line with the pencil.

    • 5

Hold the strip of construction paper that is now a "black belt' horizontally with the darker colored ends facing away from you. Place the strip against your back at your waist.

    • 6

Cross the right end of the strip over the left end. Bring the right end up toward you. Pull the left end to your left to form a loose loop. Arrange each end so that they are angled down.
