How to a Make Month-to-Month Chart of My Experience

It has become a truism that what gets measured gets managed. Making a chart to track your experiences will allow you to find patterns and help you discover what adjustments you may need to make to change those experiences. This simple, versatile tool can help you track progress and achieve change in areas as diverse as weight loss, personal finance, sports performance and emotional health. Once you set up the chart, you can take a few minutes at the beginning of each month to update it.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a horizontal line across the page, a few inches from the top.

    • 2

Write the names of the categories you intend to track across the top of the line, leaving enough space between the categories to accommodate an entry under each one. For example, if you choose the categories "Month," "Number of Days I Exercised" and "Emotional Tone," it would be wise to leave most of the line free for "Emotional Tone," since those entries will take up more space on each line than the others.

    • 3

Draw vertical lines down the page to divide each pair of adjacent categories. If desired, draw a rectangle around the outside of the chart as well.

    • 4

Write the information you collect for each month under the categories you specified. For example, if your categories are "Month," "Number of Miles Jogged," "Avg. Time Per Mile" and "Weight Gain/Loss," the first line of data might say "June," "30," "10:35" and "-6 lbs." Update the chart with a new line of data every month.
