How to Process Velox D-5 Paper

Although film cameras have been replaced by their digital counterparts, some enthusiasts still take pride in the art of film photography. If you would like to master the entire process from click to pic, then you will have to learn to process your own film. Velox paper was introduced by Kodak in 1919 and was used in contact printing. In contact printing, the film negatives are put into contact with the Velox paper and then held up to diffuse light so that the images were projected in positive form. This allowed photographers to view the image before ordering prints of enlargements.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the developer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mix the solution in a tray and place it on your working surface. All of the equipment must be located in your dark room.

    • 2

Mix your stop bath in the second tray and the fixer in the third. The mixing instructions will vary from one product to another, so follow the manufacturer's instructions for each product. Line up the trays on your work surface with the developer on the left, the stop bath in the middle and the fixer on the right.

    • 3

Turn off the lights in the dark room, turning on a red or orange safelight so that you can work. Remove the Velox D-5 paper from its protective packaging and lay it with the emulsion side up on the 8-inch-by-10 inch board. Place the film onto the emulsion side of the Velox paper.

    • 4

Lay the glass sheet over the board and the Velox paper to keep the film in place. Turn off the safelight. Expose the Film to the 100-watt light bulb for 30 seconds to one minute. The light bulb should be about 3.5 feet from the Velox paper.

    • 5

Turn off the light and turn on the safelight. Remove the pane of glass. Use the rubber tongs to remove the Velox paper and place it in the tray with the developer. Leave it for one or two minutes.

    • 6

Move it from the developer to the stop bath tray for thirty seconds and then on to the fixer for 10 minutes. Use the tongs to remove it from the fixer, rinse it under running water and then hold it up to the clothes line and peg it in place. Leave the Velox paper to dry before turning on the lights in the dark room.
