DIY Fletching Jig

The fletching of an arrow enables the arrow to fly straighter while in the air, increasing the chances of hitting the target. The fletching must be in the correct position on the rear of the arrow to ensure stable flight. The fletching jig allows the arrow maker to add the fletching in the exact location. A homemade fletching jig is easy to make and requires a few materials which can be found at the local hardware store.

Instructions

  1. Creating the Jig

    • 1

Draw small V shapes into the top sections of the 2-by-4 blocks of wood. The shapes need to be in the same location on each block of wood.

    • 2

Cut out the V-shaped section of the blocks using a scroll saw. The cutouts are used to hold the arrow in place when applying the fletching to the arrow.

    • 3

Measure in 1 inch from each end of the long wooden board. The length of the board depends on the length of the arrows you are creating but should be at least 15 inches in length.

    • 4

Attach the 2-by-4 blocks to the long wooden board at the lines drawn from Step 3 using a drill and screwdriver.

    • 5

Punch a center hole in a square piece of cardboard. The punched hole must be large enough to slip and arrow through it. Increase the size of the hole with scissors or other sharp instrument.

    • 6

Slide an arrow with fletching already attached through the center hole of the square piece of cardboard. Use the marker to indicate on the cardboard piece where each feather or fletching is located on the arrow.

    • 7

Cut slits into the cardboard piece along the marks made from Step 6.

    Using the Jig

    • 8

Place an arrow into the V-shaped cutouts of the jig with the area of the arrow requiring fleching sticking out further at one end.

    • 9

Secure the arrow in place by using two rubber bands that wrap around the bottom of the wooden board and over the end of the arrow.

    • 10

Use the cardboard square to indicate where the fletching feathers are added.

    • 11

Place glue along the edge of the feather or other fletching material and place it onto the arrow, through the slit on the cardboard square. The cardboard square holds the fletching in place while it dries.

    • 12

Repeat Step 4 until all fletchings have been added.
