How to Build Band Carts

Band carts, or rubber band cars, use the elasticity of the band to create potential, or stored, energy. When this is released the wheels are turned, propelling the cart forward. Potential energy is a major part of everyday life so this variety of experiment has long been popular with science teachers and has been used numerous times for student projects.

Things You'll Need

  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Wooden skewers
  • Rubber band
  • Sticky tape
  • Wheels
  • Poster putty

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the piece of cardboard so the corrugation runs width-ways rather than length-ways. Cut out a section of the cardboard 4-inches wide and 6-inches long.

    • 2

Cut a section out of one of the 4-inch sides which is 2-inches wide and 1 1/2- inches deep. This needs to be in the center so there are two 1-inch sections on either side.

    • 3

Run two skewers through the corrugation so an equal amount of the skewer is poking out each side. One skewer axle needs to be at the front and the other at the back, the same arrangement as a regular car. Cut the skewers to length if required, but make sure there is enough axle available for the wheels to fit on to.

    • 4

Attach a small piece of sticky tape to the skewer that runs through the notch cut in Step 2. This needs to go in the center of the axle and should be 1/4-inch wide. This needs to be quite sturdy so layer up several pieces of sticky tape.

    • 5

Fit the wheels to the axles and hold in place with poster putty. Anything circular will be suitable for this. If the wheels are loose on the axle use washers to secure them.

    • 6

Tape one end of the rubber band to the back of the cart and stretch the other end over the catch made in Step 4.

    • 7

Rotate the axle counterclockwise several times to produce stored energy in the rubber band. Release the axle to make the vehicle go.
