DIY Color Coded Mouldings

Automotive paint colors are coded according to manufacturer. This makes it possible to exactly match the color of your vehicle, with paint that is produced by the manufacturer or custom blended to match that paint code. In addition, some vehicles have a separate color for trim mouldings and other accent areas. This color will also be coded. Painting your own vehicle is a process that is difficult at best. If the car, truck or van is highly valued or you are not confident in painting it yourself, it is always a good idea to consult a professional to perform the work.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the color code for your vehicle. This can be found on the service parts identification label. The service label is a paper sticker that is usually in the driver's door jamb, around the spare tire, underneath the hood or in the trunk. Order urethane-based automotive paint online, from your local body shop, auto dealer or auto parts store using the specific color code for your trim mouldings.

    • 2

Remove all trim mouldings from your vehicle, or mask all nearby areas with painter's tape.

    • 3

Use a brush to apply a thin coat of automotive primer to the trim. Apply this carefully and evenly. Sand with 800 to 2000 grit sandpaper until even and smooth.

    • 4

Mix one part paint and two parts reducer in a cup. Stir well. Pour into the cup on your spray gun. Apply a base coat of paint to your trim, holding the gun 12 to 18 inches from the surface. Allow to dry for 15 to 10 minutes. Apply a second coat and allow to dry for 60 to 90 minutes, or until dry to the touch. Test the tackiness in an inconspicuous area.

    • 5

Clean out the gun according to your manufacturer's instructions. This varies by brand.

    • 6

Mix one part clear coat and two parts reducer in a clean cup. Spray this in a thin coat on the trim. Allow to dry for 15 minutes and repeat for at least two more coats. Sand lightly with 2000 grit sand paper between each coat.

    • 7

Allow to cure fully before waxing. This may take up to 30 days. The trim moulding can be attached to the car as soon as the clear coat is dry to the touch, which will take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the temperature and the thickness of the coat.
