How to: DIY Purple DJ Laser Lights

Photographers use a technique called a "gobo" to modify spotlights to help them create various lighting effects. To create a purple DJ laser light beam using this technique, colored plastic sheeting is placed over the spotlight. Light produced from a spotlight passes through the plastic to make a purple-colored beam. Materials for this project are typically available at hobby stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the diameter of the spotlight with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurement.

    • 2

Divide the diameter of the spotlight by two to obtain the radius. Set the compass to the radius and draw the outline of a circle on the purple plastic sheet with the felt tip marker.

    • 3

Set the compass to 1 inch and draw a small circle in the middle of the larger outline. Cut out the outline for the larger circle with the scissors.

    • 4

Cut a piece of masking tape to the shape of the 1-inch circle. Place the masking tape over the outline on the round piece of cut plastic.

    • 5

Place the round piece of cut plastic on the newspaper. Paint the surface of the plastic by using the black spray paint. Allow the paint to dry for at least 1 hour and then remove the masking tape.

    • 6

Set the plastic gobo over the spotlight and secure with the gaffers tape. Turn on the spotlight to see the laser effect of the light beam.
