How to Cut Fiberglass Woven Rovings

Woven rovings are the toughest type of fiber used in fiberglass. They are often used between layers of chopped mat in cars, trucks, boats and other places where tensile strength is paramount. Woven rovings are typically purchased in panels -- unlike chopped mat, which is sold in thin strips. Because of this, it is often necessary to cut the rovings to fit them on the surface of the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the woven roving on a cut-resistant surface and hold it taut with your hand or a clamp. The work surface should be hard and flat, or a cutting board should be used.

    • 2

Measure your cuts, if necessary. You can write on the roving with a water-soluble pencil or marker. Chalk also works well for marking your cut lines.

    • 3

Press a utility knife into the woven roving at the end of the cut line, and add pressure until the knife slices into the material.

    • 4

Pull the knife down the roving, creating a cut. Repeat for any other cuts or other rovings.
