How to Remove Stuck Flute Springs

The keys on your flute produce different notes by forming air-tight seals which, in turn, control the flow of air through the instrument. Stuck springs disrupt this normal flow of air by preventing the keys from forming proper seals. This results in incorrect notes or keys that are difficult to press. Fix this common problem by removing problematic springs. The procedure you carry out depends on whether your flute uses flat springs or needle springs.

Instructions

  1. Flat Spring Removal

    • 1

Remove the keys from the flute to expose the flat spring. Simply snap the keys off the flute and place them on a soft towel. Place the keys in sequential order to remember their exact positioning when it comes time to place the keys back on.

    • 2

Remove the screw on the spring. This screw attached the spring to the key, ensuring the spring compressed when you pushed down on the key. Place the screw on the towel with the removed keys.

    • 3

Pull flat keys from the opening. Use needle nose pliers to reach the spring if you cannot reach the stuck key with your fingers. Pull directly up to remove.

    • 4

Pull the needle springs away from the keys. These springs have long needle-like protrusions that are pressure fitted into small holes underneath the keys. This makes needle springs more difficult to remove than flat springs. Use pliers to pull the spring from the fitting under the key. Gently lift out once removed from the fitting.
