How to Make an Origami Bell

Origami, composed of the Japanese words oru (to fold) and kami (paper), became a recreational and ceremonial art in Japan by the Edo period. Modern origami challenges hobbyists by creating works of art by folding a single piece of paper and without the use of scissors or glue. An origami bell is an easy fold perfect for holiday celebrations. The finished bell has a decorative rim and top as well as a clapper peeking out a the bottom.

Instructions

Start with the colored side down. Make a diagonal crease in the middle, creating a large triangle. Reopen the paper and lay it flat like a diamond, with a point at the top, sides and bottom.

    • 2

Fold the top point of the paper at a slight angle toward the middle crease. The tip of the point should sit slightly beneath the the middle crease. This angle is an indicator of the width of the bell, the wider the angle, the wider the bell.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 with the bottom tip of the paper. Fold the middle of the paper in the opposite direction of the previous fold, and bring the bottom tip up to meet the angle you made with the top tip. Reopen the paper. You should have two flaps, one that will overlap the other.

    • 4

Turn the paper to the right, so the more narrow, uncolored side is at the top. Flip the paper over to the colored side. Take the wider bottom part and fold it up until the complete uncolored part is revealed. Crease well. Take the tip of uncolored side and pull it down, to the edge of the crease you just made and crease the fold. Pull down the entire tip until the two creases you made align. This will be the rim of the bell.

Reopen the creases to reveal the wide uncolored part. Fold the top of the uncolored part down to create a small triangle within the bottom of the uncolored part. This will be clapper. Pull the uncolored part down, following an earlier crease to hide any uncolored parts.
