How to Operate an Electronic Keyer

The electronic keyer is a machine used to transmit Morse code. Invented in 1844 by Samuel Morse, it uses a specific dot (dit) and dash (dah) pattern to symbolize each letter of the alphabet. Electronic keyers use this dit and dah pattern to communicate with a telegraph transmitter, which is transmitted through telegraph wires or radio signals. Operating an electronic keyer is easy, as long as the dots and dashes of the Morse code alphabet are memorized.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the electronic keyer on. Place it on a flat surface, like a table or desk, directly in front of you.

    • 2

Place your hand on the flat surface, palm down, directly in front of the keyer. Place your thumb on the left paddle and your index finger on the right paddle if you are right-handed. Place your index finger on the left paddle and your thumb on the right paddle if you are left-handed.

    • 3

Create dits by pushing the left paddle to the right. Create dahs by pushing the right paddle to the left.

    • 4

Use correct timing so the letters are translated properly. A dit is equal to one unit of time. A dah is equal to three units of time. Create a space between each letter by pausing for three units of time. Create a space between each word by pausing for seven units of time.
