DIY: Grinder and Welding Stand

A grinding and welding table for use in your workshop needs to be constructed of steel or metal. A stand made of wood could catch fire from the sparks produced when welding. Building the table requires various pieces of angle iron. Angle iron has the appearance of a 90-degree or a side section of square tubing.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/8-inch angle iron, two 18-inch pieces
  • 1/8-inch angle iron, two 30-inch pieces
  • Framing square
  • Clamp
  • Welder
  • 1/8-inch angle iron, four 36-inch pieces
  • Steel plate, 29 ½ by 17 by ½ inches
  • Welding-gun holder

Instructions

    • 1

Place the corner of one 18-inch piece of angle iron together with the corner of a 30-inch piece of angle iron on the floor. Use the framing square to align the two pieces and then secure with the clamp. Weld the corners of the angle iron to secure them together.

    • 2

Place the second 18-inch piece of angle iron together with the second 30-inch piece of angle iron. Align with the framing square and secure with the clamp. Weld the two pieces together.

    • 3

Set the two sections together and secure with the clamp and then weld the corners. This is the frame for the top of the stand.

    • 4

Position the welded frame on the floor with the flat edge facing up. Lay the steel plate inside the frame and then make sure it is centered. Weld along each edge of the steel plate.

    • 5

Place one of the 36-inch pieces of angle iron at one corner and secure using a clamp. Weld the piece of angle iron to the top of the stand. Repeat this step to weld the remaining 36-inch pieces of angle iron to the top of the stand.

    • 6

Set the completed metal stand on its legs. Clamp the welding-gun holder to the top at a 45-degree angle. Weld the welding-gun holder to the stand.
